Description:
18/11/2021, under detention, damaged, at Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, Canary Islands, Spain.
On the 01/06/2021, the Mongolian registered vessel was intercepted at dawn, some 30 kilometers from Fuerteventura, by the Spanish Customs Surveillance Service team embarked on the 'Sacre' patrol boat, in rough seas. (See here: flic.kr/p/iWK8VC )
An inspection revealed that the vessel was carrying hashish.
The ship, it's Italian master, & three Senegalese crew members were detained and taken to Las Palmas de Gran Canaria, where a further inspection revealed 22,100 kilos of hashish, divided into 700 bales; it is the second largest cache of this drug captured by the Customs Surveillance Service in Spain.
The three law enforcement agencies involved in the operation; the Police, the Civil Guard and Customs, believe that the former fishing vessel was heading south on the new route of entry of hashish to Europe: a huge detour that begins on the Atlantic coast of Morocco, it continues to Senegal or the Gulf of Guinea and returns overland to North Africa through the Sahel to end up in Libya.
The vessel was built as a fishing ship in 1976 by Jansen's Schiffswerft, Leer, Germany.
249 g.t. and 327 dwt., as:
'Kasino' to 1989,
'Jennie W. to 2002,
'Leitisteinur' to 2010,
'Annika II' to unknown, and
'Odyssey 227' since.
Her fate will surely be the breakers torches, here in Las Palmas, after judicial processes are completed.
