I was reading opinions about harbour overviews on the forum. There was mention of the possible historic interest in older ones.
This is Assab in early 1964. The dock we were alongside was similar to the one seen on the left of the picture. There was nothing on it and it had several wide dangerously deep holes in it that were roped off. We self loaded a deck cargo of dried fish for Colombo that became wet en route and rotted while in the roads waiting for a berth. It had infested the ship with copra bugs before we broke the monotony at anchor by steaming out to sea and dumping it. Assab seems to have developed some since then.
