Description:

This vessel, pictured here in the 1950's, was spotted recently during an overhaul at the yard at Elefsina (Greece). I am sure it's the same ship. She is the former Italian-flag LAURANA, built 1939 at Fiume (present-day Rijeka), sold 1950 to Greece and renamed NERAÏDA in 1952. Jadrolinija's VLADIMIR NAZOR class (1952-1954) were half-sisters of the LAURANA. More details and a lot of questions I have posted as a note to the new picture of the NERAÏDA here: http://www.shipspotting.com/modules/myalbum/photo.php?lid=316192

Here is the story of Neraida.
Neraida was bought in the early 50's by J. Latsis and was his first passenger ship. It served the islands near Piraeus (Aegina, Methana, Poros, Hydra, Spetses)until the early 70's (1970 if I am not wrong). Always under Latsis ownership, it was converted to day cruiser, with minor external modifications, to the islands of Aegina, Poros and Hydra until the mid-70's when it was used as floating hotel/offices for Latsis engineers in Saudi Arabia. Later, it returned to Greece and was docked at the Elefsis oil refineries Petrola also owned by Latsis. A few years later it was taken ashore on the docks of Petrola and kept in storage where it still is. According to the Greek shipping news magazine EFOPLISTIS (Jan. 2006)there are serious considerations by the Latsis family to fully restore the ship and refloat it again. The possible reason is that being the first ship owned by John Latsis before he became a world shipping and industry magnate it is considered a "lucky" ship and unlike other ships purchased by the company and later broken up (like Margarita ex-Windsor Castle, or Marianna 9 ex-Principe Perfeito, and many others)was kept by the company. I have very fond memories of the ship in my childhood travelling with my parents every summer in the 60's and 70's to our summer house on the island of Hydra.
May she live many years.

Hello George,

Thanks for your reminicenses, stating the route of the Neraïda. I did't know she did the whole Argosaronic, which is quite a distance to cover. It was probably because of this route that her FIAT diesels were replaced in 1954 with MAN engines, giving her a 17 kn speed!

Kind regards,

Anton

NERAIDA is back and expected to arrive back to Eleusis where she is going to house the Latsis archives with occational trips in the Saronic Gulf. Here is a picture of her from the greek blogspot nautilia.gr in her new, not so attractive according to my traditionalist taste, modernised form.

Somehow this ship remembers me the CAMPANIA SECONDA which was operating as a car / passenger ferry in the Gulf of Naples in the 70s and 80s.
Perhaps one of the Italian members might help here.

It is a beautiful ship!

That's very correct, Roman. The CAMPANIA SECONDA is the former KOSTA RACIN. She was converted to carry cars. There were six ferries built for Jadrolinija as half-sister of the LAURANA: the VLADIMIR NAZOR (now SEAGULL I), NJEGOS (where is she now?), VUK KARADZIC (where is she now?), IVAN CANKAR (became CAMPANIA PRIMA in Italy, broken-up), ALEKSA SANTIC (became EPOMEO PRIMO in Italy, broken-up) and KOSTA RACIN.

Thank you for your comment,

Anton

Thanks, Danilo, for this useful information. I still didn't know what had become of the Vuk Karadzic. Now I know! One addition: the Vladimir Nazor was renamed Porec in 1986. I asked the first officer when the ship docked in Dubrovnik's old harbour, and he said this was done at the request of Jadrolinija (a new Vladimir Nazor was built in 1986).

Pozdrav, Anton
