The cargo ship had crashed into the Holtenau high bridges in the Schleswig-Holstein state capital early Wednesday morning. Bridge inspectors have since detected damage to the structures. This was announced by the State Office for Road Construction and Transport (LBV.SH) in Kiel in the early afternoon. "Already, the special team could determine that there are deformations on the cross girders on both bridges as well as numerous cracks on the weld seams and, in addition, seam tears," explained the responsible division manager Susan Müller. She estimates the material damage to be in the six-figure range.
Further testing will take several days

For the time being, the elevated bridges remain closed to motor traffic as well as cyclists and pedestrians. Another external expert is to examine the damage and the effects on stability and traffic safety in more detail, as Müller explained. Then, together with the experts from LBV.SH, further steps would be decided. This will probably take several days, the state agency said. It is therefore unclear when the closures will be lifted again. Safety comes first, says Müller. Only ambulances and fire engines are allowed to cross the bridges at walking speed in individual cases.
