It happens. In my 21 years in the U.S. Navy of the ships I was on: 4 scrapped, 1 sold to foreign navy (later scrapped) and 2 sunk as targets in live fire exercises. Unless the ship is preserved, the end is always ignominious. The JFK is likely destined for the scrapper's torch, not a museum.
