Hello! For the ID, do we know which Silja ferry was on the other side of the port that day? This usually gives it away as most of the time towards the end of their short career with Viking, the Saga would have same days with Finlandia and Song with Silvia Regina.

Sorry, the only photo of the other side shows IÖMATAR, see: https://commons.wikimedia.org/wiki/File:Ilmatar_IMO_6402937_F_Helsinki_1984ca.jpg

Hello Manfred and jonten99, thanks for your efforts. The same negative film, taken by my father, shows on the other side of the bay the ILMATAR, wearing this name until 1984. This means that the photo was taken in 1984 (guessed by me) or earlier.

I'm still leaning towards it being Viking Saga because I found this picture of Viking Saga in Helsinki with the Viking Line logos being removed before she was renamed and painted white https://www.faktaomfartyg.se/viking_saga_1980_b_6.htm

In Wolfgangs photo is does seem like there is hull is just red, without any logos on the side, which Viking Saga was when she was in Helsinki in the May of 1986.

Just for the date of photo:
In October 1985 a so called 'ducktail' was added during drydock. It is not visible in Wolfgang's photo so the date is pre-October 1985.

Sorry Gentlemen, that is not correct. Those 'holes' are hatches that can be opened or closed to get to the outside of the hawse to fasten a heaving line to a rope.
In Wolfgang's photo they are closed, in this one they are open:

Must think further for a secure id.

Oh you are totally right, I can see it now on Wolfgangs picture! Thanks for pointing it out!

Thanks jonton99 and also Clive for solving this difficult puzzle!

It is either Viking Saga or Viking Song. They were virtually identical, so from this view point (to me at least) impossible to say for sure which of the two it is.

That would be M/S Viking Saga. Viking Song had two holes in the superstructure right above the red paint on each side of the ramp on the stern and Viking Saga did not, just like the ship pictured here.
