Description:

The Lorain (Ohio) West Breakwater Light; also referred to as Lorain Harbor Light, was constructed in 1917 by the United States Army Corps of Engineers and placed into service where the Black River empties into Lake Erie, one of North America's Great Lakes. The light was deactivated in 1965 and later restored and relit by a volunteer community group. For the better part of the 20th Century a steel mill, ship building works and other industries were located in Lorain with hundreds of Great Lakes bulk freighters calling at Lorain, many of them loaded with iron ore and later taconite pellets for the nearby steel mill. In this photo Algoma Central's Agawa Canyon enters the harbor with a load of limestone for the steel mill. Yes, the lighthouse has a tilt to it - your eyes are not deceiving you.
