Hello Yvon,
Many thanks for the definition and historical details of this accident.
The help of general cargo SIMFEROPOL (imo 5328653) perhaps was not needed, although she was present in the area of the accident.
Kind regards,
Vladimir

Hello Vladimir,
The burning tanker is NAESS SPIRIT (1960 /41327 gt / IMo6245494) which sustained fire in the engine room on 26 Mar 1973, 100M west of Brittany. An italian cadet engineer died.
The Royal Navy RESOURCE (A480), in the vicinity for some exercises, saved the tanker, airlifting a firemen team on board.
The tug ABEILLE 30, which was passing by, bound to Marseilles, came alonside to cool the hull with her fifi.
The NAESS SPIRIT was then towed to Brest roads by the tug HERMES, and later to Amsterdam for repairs.
The ship in the background is the French tanker CHEVERNY (1956 / 21430 gt / IMo5069817) which arrived first but, being not free gas, she must keep clear.
Regards,
Yvon
