Description:

The Spanish owned BAMBY, built at Arendal (Norway) in 1917, had passed Portishead on 29th August 1963 during a call at Bristol or Avonmouth. Here, she is seen at Gibraltar around that same month, possibly en route to the Bristol Channel.

During the early/mid 1960s, BAMBY's owner, V. & J.A. Ensenat of Madrid, had also operated the small cargo ships DUMBO, TICO, RILDA and RONDANE.

Hi Malcolm, the BAMBY arrived at Teignmouth, presumably her next port of call after the Bristol Channel, on 01 September 1963 to load clay. She was flying the Panamanian flag at that time and her gross tonnage was recorded as 904 tons with a dwt of 1200. Our photographs show her arriving light on the Sunday afternoon, and she sailed later in the week on the evening springs. I remember watching her sail, but no camera, however I'm positive that she did not have a deck cargo and was fully loaded. Could the Gibraltar photo have been taken earlier in August, possibly bound for somewhere like Watchet with a cargo for the paper mill? She may then have continued on to Bristol/Avonmouth to complete her discharge. Not sure where she sailed for from Teignmouth but the Genoa/Spezia area would have been likely.
Best Regards
Tom

Many thanks Tom. As the photo date of BAMBY at Gibraltar was originally thought to be September 1963, she might have been on that outward voyage from Teignmouth but the deck cargo suggests otherwise. Best regards. Malcolm
