Description:

This is a cropped bit of a well known photograph of the 4-master PEKING by Hans Hartz, said to be taken in the German Bight. No mystery in that regard. But nowhere have I ever seen the slightest mention of the cargo vessel, let alone a name. I am sure that the slightly unusual silhouette of her may ring a bell with a few of you here. Help will be much appreciated.

She is ALCINOUS: https://www.marhisdata.nl/image.php?code=30386&hash=12a87e5715dc0bb2de32ca0957824bdeb855d16f&opt=5
When enlighted you can see that the ship name's writing is longer than the writing of the homeport Amsterdam, with PHRONTIS it is the other way around.

Thank you, Manfred. You may be right. In the meantime I found there was yet another one of the kind, STENTOR (see www.clydeships.co.uk and/or State Library Queensland), so now I begin to wonder, how many sisters were there altogether.

There were only the three in the class, and STENTOR was the only one flying the UK-flag (until ALCINOUS was transferred between flags in 1950 and renamed PHEMIUS). Since the vessel appears to be flying the Netherlands flag, it certainly rules out STENTOR.
