Although originally designed as a breakbulk cargo ship, the American Lancer was completed in 1968 as one of the first purpose-built cellular container ships. At the time she was also one of the largest and fastest, being over 22,000 tons and capable of well over 21 knots. The "Lancer-class" container ships proved successful, all eight remaining in service until well after 2000.
