Lykes home port was in New Orleans. However, the ships always tied up alongside wharves (levees) rather than finger piers, and they always tied up facing upstream. As a result, the ships always tied up with their starboard sides facing the home office and their port sides facing the opposite way. Consequently, Captains and Chief Mates always ensured that the starboard side was nicely painted when they arrived in New Orleans, but they didn't care about the port side.
