Description:

Seen on 8th February 2024, lying in her final resting place in the Garden Island Ships' Graveyard where she was abandoned in 1910.

Built in Kirkaldy, Scotland in 1857 by John Brown and Company, the three-masted iron-hulled barque SUNBEAM was used in international trade under a number of owners before being converted to a coal hulk in Melbourne in 1886. She was brought to Port Adelaide shortly afterwards for use as a general hulk within the port. She was abandoned in the Garden Island Ships' Graveyard in October 1910, becoming the first iron-hulled vessel in the Graveyard.

The boiler lying adjacent to the starboard bow is of unknown origin.

Thanks Tony and Wuka, the restoration ship has sailed long ago (if you'll pardon the pun) for all the ships in the Graveyard. Efforts need to be focussed on ships that are still able to be saved such as the FALIE here in Adelaide (and I would have added the FORCEFUL in Brisbane, but it seems that it's now too late for her, sadly).

Pete, nice photograph and interesting information. Needs some serious restoration. Cheers.

A sad sight. I am afraid that it is definitely too late for any renovation / reconstruction.
