WELCOME TO SHIPSPOTTING.COM
Description:
** Location now identified as the Schottegat, Willemstad, Curacao**
I can delete this photo if it does not meet site standards.
Identifying the port would be helpful to me, if not the tankers.
The photo may need to be flipped as I cannot tell if it is in the correct orientation.
Circa 1963-1965, unknown port, possibly in the Mediterranean. North Africa?
Left to right:
1) To be identified.
2) GINEVRA FASSIO IMO 5130745.
3) To be identified.
4) VIANA IMO 5379456 or VIDENA IMO 5379963
Four, three-island oil tankers which seem to be loading cargoes, rather than discharging them. (No obvious signs of a refinery.)
The distinctive design of the central tanker may be identifiable?
The tanker at extreme right may be a Shell or BP vessel.
Taken from a Danish ship sailing past.
Scanned from a poor quality slide in the collection of the late Niels Anker Larsen, former Danish Merchant Navy Radio Officer.
Former name(s):
- Ginevra (Until 1976 Jan)
- Ginevra Fassio (Until 1973 Jan)

I have a Lloyd Shipping Index dated September 11th 1964, and checked the reported ports of call of FASSIO tankers. Here they are :
Leghorn, Novorrossiyk, Falmouth, Curacao, New Orleans, Savona, Genoa, Trieste, Villa Constitucion, Ancona, Ravenna, Kismayu, Naples, Spezia, Jabal Dhanna, Hampton Roads, Marseille, New York, (GINEVRA Portland (Me), Puerto Miranda), Baltimore, Civitavecchia, Port de Bouc, Mena Ahmadi, San Francisco, Venice, Merka.
The unknown harbor is perhaps in the list ?

Yvon

I can, from personal knowledge, eliminate Falmouth, Naples, Genoa, Jebel Dhanna, Mena Al Ahmadi, Trieste & Venice, for now!
Remaining possibilites are therefore:
Leghorn, Novorrossiyk, Curacao, New Orleans, Savona, Villa Constitucion, Ancona, Ravenna, Kismayu, Spezia, Hampton Roads, Marseille, New York, (GINEVRA Portland (Me), Baltimore, Civitavecchia, Port de Bouc, San Francisco, Venice.

Thanks for knocking Puerto Miranda off the list too!

And also... the two shell tankers I linked to appear to be sisters to Viana/Videna.

By the way, note that on the Google Earth scene of Merka, dated 2004, in position 01°42'16"N & 044°45'52"E, you can find the wreck of AL BHAR AL SABAH, former Romanian general cargo ship BRASOV (IMo6410415). The wreck disappeared after 2015.

I have checked every class of their midship/three island types from 1962 onwards, and find it is one of two distinctive sisterships:
VIANA IMO 5379456
or
VIDENA IMO 5379963
Both Dutch built at Wilton-Fijenoord for NV Mij tot Financiering van Bedrijfspanden of Rotterdam.

All Niels' slides that I am working from, hundreds of them, are all mixed up.
This one was with a few from his time on 'Arkansas' which was running around the Med. Obviously, I cannot say if it IS one from that batch, but I was thinking the same thing - Mediterranean.

The tanker in the middle looks like an italian built.
She could be one of some sister ships of about 26000 gt built for Villain & Fassio.
Only the oldest have big vents ahead of the funnel :
- ITALIA MARTELLI FASSIO (1957 / IMo5165518), https://www.naviearmatori.net/albums/userpics/14665/1426435905.jpg, white vents
- GINEVRA FASSIO (1959 / IMo5130745), https://www.shipsnostalgia.com/media/ginevra-fassio.400302/, dark vents
But to be confirmed !

The Ansaldo built ship's name consists of two words only.
I have checked every ship that could have matched from the yard, and am sure you are correct that it is, in fact:
GINEVRA FASSIO IMO 5130745.
Thank you :-)
