Description:

ENS Admiral Cowan M313 at Kyle of Lochalsh

From Estonian Review
Queen Elizabeth II to Hand Ship's Badge to Estonian Navy Oct 5 - During her visit later this month, Queen Elizabeth II of Britain is set to hand to the Estonian navy the badge to be used by one of the mine hunters that the navy is buying from Britain. One of the three British-made mine hunters will be named the Admiral Cowan after Admiral Walter Cowan, who led the British light cruiser squadron that was active in the Baltic Sea at the time of Estonia's War of Independence (1918-1920). The British naval unit supported Estonian forces from the sea. Queen Elizabeth II will hand the ship’s badge to Estonia in a ceremony on board the Royal Navy's HMS Liverpool in Tallinn's Old Harbour on Oct. 20. Estonia is buying three mine hunters of the Sandown class from the British Navy for 800 million kroons (EUR 5.1 mln) in what is one of the largest military hardware procurements in Estonia's history. The first of the ships will be delivered in April 2007, the second in March 2008 and the last one in February-March 2009. The ship to be delivered first will be named the Admiral Cowan. The 52.6-meter mine hunters were built at Vosper Thornycroft shipyards in the years 1988-2001. The ships take a crew of 37 and the Estonian Navy is planning to have the vessels in active use for at least 15 years.
