Description:
Alfred Holt's classic Blue Funnel liner Orestes at Birkenhead "D" Berth, Port Adelaide in 1956. She was thirty years old at the time, but served another seven years until b/u at Mihara in August 1963.
When completed by Workman, Clark & Co Ltd at Belfast in June 1926, Orestes was the highest-powered diesel-engined cargo ship afloat. She had an eventful World War II including being attacked by the [surfaced] Japanese submarine I24 off Sydney in June 1942. What a ship.
