The ship was towed to Turkey, departing the US on June 4, 1992 and reaching the Sea of Marmara on July 9. She was then towed to Ukraine, where, in Sevastopol Shipyard, she underwent asbestos removal which lasted from 1993 to 1994. The interior of the ship was almost completely stripped down to the bulkheads during this time. Full story on the UNITED STATES here: https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_United_States

Dear Pieter, thanks for this introduction and link to the Wikipedia. Nowdays this asbestos removal work would cost a fortune.

Vitaliy, good day. I have looked with a great interest at your photos of the United States in Sevastopol at Sevmorzavod shipyard. This tugboat RITM indicates that this could be middle of 80-s last century. Could you tell some details of this call? Was it unscheduled repair in dry dock due to grounding, fishing nets removal? Or regular scheduled dock repairs?... Thank you.
