I just loved this class with their huge bulbous bows....................pity they were only around for just over 10 years.........

All these supertankers that proliferated in the late 60's/early 70's were killed off by OPEC hiking the price of crude..................as for the bulbous bow, you'll have to ask a naval architect - its someting to do with easing the way through the water and reducing viscous flow thus giving better fuel consumption (I think). Most ships have them now (bit like winglets on airplane wings) - but these were enormous and I would have thought caused more water resistance than less, especially when in ballast.
