BEE fishing boat for Sunday launch

By Xolile Bhengu

THE Port Elizabeth fishing industry will be in the spotlight again when Environmental Affairs deputy minister Joyce Mabudafhasi officiates at the launch of new local fishing vessel, Elke M, on Sunday.

The new vessel is the latest acquisition of black economic empowerment company Mayibuye Fishing, jointly managed by Boya Chetty and Gavin Lee Jones, both of Port Elizabeth.

Mayibuye is one of the most successful black- owned companies in the region.

Established eight years ago, it was rated as Top Fishing Company in the Eastern Cape for 2003-04 by Professional Management Review.

According to Chetty this week, Mayibuye acquired the vessel from German company Cux Haven at a cost of about R10-million.

The launch on Sunday will be attended by several senior government officials, including deputy director general of Marine and Coastal Management Horst Kleinschmidt..

Regards

Steve Ellwood

The ship will operate solely from Port Elizabeth, concentrating on the export market – mainly Spain.

Said Chetty: “We are very proud to be the first BEE company in the country to have purchased and imported a vessel from Germany.”
