Hi. I have just seen the photo of my old ship Newglade. I joined her in Ellesmere Port, where we lightened prior to going up to Irwell Park Wharf at the top end of the canal. Our cargo was sulphur for Manchester and Avonmouth,I was in her when this photo was taken. After discharging in Avonmouth we went into dry dock there and spent a total of six weeks undergoing repairs. We sailed in ballast for Safi to load fertiliser for Bourgas in Bulgaria. We spent five weeks in Bulgaria and then sailed for Piraeus. After six weeks in Greece the company flew all the crew back to the UK and Hong Kong and three days later the ship caught fire, killing the 2nd Engineer and two fireman. I retired from the sea after nearly fifty years of which thirty six years were in command. Regards. Capt David McNamee
