The research vessel Viola M Davidson, was built by Abco Industries Ltd in Lunenburg, Nova Scotia.

The vessel's namesake, was a pioneer in marine research.

The vessel operates out of St. Andrews**, NB, where Dr. Davidson was one of the first female marine scientists. As with all CCG DFO vessels it can be multi-tasked to Search & Rescue if needed, however, its primary role is research.

** Vessel makes periodic visits to Saint John. With Hurricane Lee churning up the Eastern seaboard, it presumably decided to seek refuge in Saint John until hurricane blew over.....
